Best time to do Manaslu Circuit Trek

One of the underrated treks in Nepal is the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Very few trekkers make their way to the trail of Manalsu Circuit trek. Also called Manaslu trek, this trek welcomes a handful of trekkers in peak season. And needless to say, the trail remains desolate during winter and monsoon season.

Manaslu trek takes you to an off-the-beaten-path, usually less-crowded and into the remote villages of Nepal. This trek circumnavigate the Manaslu peaks and rewards stunning views of the world’s eighth peak and neighbouring peak. It is one of the closest trekking trail from Kathmandu and can be completed within 2 weeks. Trekkers get to explore Budi Gandaki, Nubri, and Marsyangdi valley, gain insight into Tibetan culture and enjoy warm hospitality of local people.

Previously, trekkers who want to explore this region had to camp, but with the influx of regular treks every year, there are new teahouses along the route. However, Manaslu region is arguably still relatively virgin destination in Nepal. Doing this trek means you will be explored least visited corners of Nepal Himalaya and restricted areas.

The trail of Manaslu Circuit Trek brims with glacial rivers, waterfalls, traditional villages, ancient monasteries and lush pine forests. The trail traverses the  high-altitude Bhotia settlements bordering Tibet. Jagat, Dang, Prok, Lho, Sama Gaon, Dharmasala, and Bimtang are some of the major resting grounds along the way. Sama Gaon is a famous acclimatization stop in Manaslu region. Trekkers often rest extra one day to acclimatize to higher altitude.

The highest point of this trek is Larkya La Pass at 5,160m, which is one of the high mountain passes in Nepal. Crossing this pass is often considered a challenging adventure. The trek bestows breathtaking views of Annapurna II, Gyaji Himal, Himlung, Manaslu, Kang Guru, Nemjung, and surrounding peaks.  By the time you have completed the trek, you would have explored three Himalayan valleys: Budi Gandaki, Nubri, and Marshyangdi valleys.

Mount Manaslu

Since the trek passes the restricted Manaslu Conservation area, you will get a chance of spotting rare mammals like Snow Leopards, Musk Deer, and Himalayan Thar. Established in 1998, Manaslu Conservation Area is home to 33 species of mammals, over110 species of birds, and over 1500–2000 species of flowering plants. En route, you can do side trips as well. Many trekkers love to explore Birendra Tal. If you have extra days, you can explore Tsum valley as well. For short trips, explore Manaslu Base Camp or Kal Tal.

The Manaslu trek is often considered one of the safest treks in Nepal. Although the trail is relatively new, it is safe to trek to Manaslu region. However, please be informed that you cannot do Manaslu Circuit Trek alone; you will have to hire a guide to do this trek. The remote lifestyle and enticing local culture will surely allure you. On top of that, the warm hospitality of kind people is second to none.

If you are wondering about Manaslu trek itinerary, don’t be worry. This trek can be done within 14 to 17 days. You can always customize the itinerary that best fit your budget and preference. Ensure to add acclimatization day before you book the trip. Regarding the cost, as you know it, it depends on many factors. However, rest assured that the trek is comparatively affordable than EBC trek or ABC trek. One thing worth mentioning in this blog is the permits required for the manaslu trek. You will need three permits: Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), Annapurna Conservation Area Project Permit (ACAP) and Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP).

On the way to manaslu

Coming to the main point, the best time for trekking to Manaslu is spring and autumn. Like with every other trek, Manaslu Trek is best done in these two seasons. This is the time when the trails are adorned with greenery and rhododendron blooms. The sky remains clear with best views of the mountains. The weather is pleasant, neither too hot nor too cold. October, November, April and May are the best months to plan for this trek. It is suggested to trek during any of these months. If you cannot plan for spring or autumn, do not think of doing in winter or monsoon. That will be one of the worst decisions you will ever make. So coming to conclusion, Manaslu trek is a must-do trek and it is best done in spring or autumn season.
