There are a number of cities across the US that make for great paddleboarding experiences. Some have already earned reputations for their waterfronts, being celebrated for their skylines or reliable breaks, especially by established surfing communities. Now, however, as stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) becomes more ubiquitous across the globe, cities are seeing their reputations grow as SUP destinations.
If you’re looking for a weekend away, one that opens up the opportunity for a relaxing break on the water or a brilliant adventure with friends, then we have five city destinations that will inspire your next vacation.
Seattle
The Emerald City has a number of lakes and shores to choose from, with a cool climate that will encourage paddleboarders to bring their wetsuits. Its many waters offer a great selection of outings to visitors, with some even having reliable waves, which can be perfect for those looking to try their hand at SUP surfing. Some will even find the boat traffic of the Fisherman’s Terminal an exciting landscape upon which to test their skills.
Chicago
Situated on the clear waters of Lake Michigan, Chicago is one of the most well-revered destinations for SUP enthusiasts. Not only are the lake’s shores calm and clear, making them ideal for long periods out on the water and perfect for beginners, but the city’s skyline is one of the most beautiful in the world, showcasing an impressive array of architecture. For those feeling a little more adventurous, there are also opportunities to paddle through the city and along its internal rivers.
Key West
If the northern climate doesn’t suit your interest, then Florida might better suit your interest, with Key West being one of the most idyllic destinations for paddleboarders, giving them the opportunity to experience golden sands and crystal clear waters.
And, alongside the fascinating ecology of the local mangroves, paddleboarders can also spend time among the abundant aquatic life from sea turtles to dolphins.
Laguna Beach
Relatively calm waters combined with pristine beaches and stunning vistas make Orange County and, specifically, Laguna Beach, one of the most sought-after destinations in California. While the surf isn’t as reliable, many paddleboarders see this as an advantage, ensuring the waters will be clear of surfers even at the height of summer.
Those without their own paddleboard will also find a number of rental options, as well as local clubs, to hire equipment from.
Austin
While Austin might not leap to the top of everybody’s list when it comes to watersports destinations, it is quickly becoming a secret favorite among paddleboarders, from beginners to professionals, and the city boasts a number of stunning lakes and rivers.
Lady Bird lake is, understandably, a firm favorite, with easy access to a number of drop-in points and reliably clear and quiet waters throughout the year. However, Spring Lake and Lake Austin are also great choices for those wanting to balance the city’s exciting food scene and nightlife with a weekend of paddleboarding.
